What are the main types of masks?

If you hear about COVID-19 or coronavirus masks, there are usually three types in Estonia:

  • surgical mask
  • protective mask FFP2
  • respirator

Let’s take a closer look at the surgical mask and share the information. The surgical mask is a disposable, loose face mask that covers your nose, mouth and chin. It is certainly beneficial to wear any mask, as this will reduce the chances of becoming infected with disease-causing bacteria and viruses.

Protects the user from splashes and droplets with large particles and helps prevent the transmission of potentially infectious airway droplets from one carrier to another. Surgical masks can have different designs, but are often flat and rectangular in shape and also folded. There is a metal strip at the top of the mask, which can be pressed into place on the nose according to the shape you need so that no air can get through from the sides.

Elastic straps or long straight cords help hold the surgical mask in place when you wear it. These can be either behind your ears or behind your head. Watch the video below on how the surgical mask should be applied.

Surgical mask and its use during COVID-19

Here are some good practices to keep in mind for masks during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • If possible, help Estonian doctors and medical staff by purchasing proper masks
  • Wear a surgical mask in public if you are ill with COVID-19 or if you are caring for someone at home who cannot wear the mask
  • Surgical masks are disposable. Do not reuse them.
  • Replace the surgical mask if it is damaged or wet.
  • Always discard the surgical mask in a closed trash bin immediately after removing it.
  • Clean your hands before putting on and removing the surgical mask. In addition, clean your hands after touching the front of the mask while wearing it.
