This is a mascara from the Japanese brand Sensai, part of its Colours make-up line. The full name is Lash Volumiser 38°C, and it comes in one shade, black. The result looks as if the lashes have been multiplied, with high-impact volume. The formula is intensely pigmented with pure black, and the effect is dramatic, almost hypnotising.

The formula’s name sums up its job: a film binds to the lashes and gives them full volume. Pure black pigment makes the colour deep, so the lashes stand out clearly in an eye look.

The 38 °C principle runs through six products in the Colours line: Lash Volumiser 38°C, Lash Lengthener 38°C, Mascara 38°C, Mascara 38°C (Separating & Lengthening), Mascara 38°C (Volumising) and Eyelash Base 38°C. Lash Lengthener is 10 ml, glossy black, with a two-layer Smooth Stretching Formula and a Lash Catching Brush with triangular bristles. Eyelash Base is 6 ml and coats each lash to emphasise the results of mascara. For volume there is also Mascara 38°C (Volumising) in shade MV-1 Black, whose Rich Film Volumiser thickens each individual lash.

Sensai: born in Japan, nurtured in Europe

The Sensai story begins with beautiful hands: scientists visiting a spinning mill noticed the unusually lovely hands of the silk spinners. After decades of research they identified a protein in raw silk fibre that has been at the heart of Sensai products ever since. Koishimaru silk is fine, light and resilient, and it was once reserved for the Japanese Imperial Court.

Kanebo’s predecessor, the Tokyo Cotton Trading Company, was established in 1887. In 1936 came SAVON DE SOIE, the first luxury facial soap featuring ingredients from Japanese silk, and in 1979 Kanebo debuted at Harrods in London. Sensai joined the Kanebo line-up in 1983 with a counselling service inspired by omotenashi, the Japanese spirit of hospitality. SENSAI EX La Crème followed in 1989, SENSAI PREMIER with ingredients derived from Koishimaru silk in 2005 and ULTIMATE in 2013.
