Probiotics: how to choose one and when to take it
Short answer

Probiotics are live bacterial cultures sold as supplements in capsules, liquids or pastes. When choosing, look at the strain list, the amount of bacteria and the form, and take the product at the same time every day, following the label. Below are three probiotics from our range and a short guide to telling them apart.

What are probiotics and prebiotics?
A probiotic is a supplement that contains live microorganisms, usually lactic acid bacteria or bifidobacteria. A prebiotic is an ingredient that serves as food for those bacteria, for example certain fibres. Some products contain only bacteria and some contain both.
How to choose a probiotic
Compare products on four points, all of which are stated on the label or the product page:
- Strains: which bacteria the product contains and how many different ones. Dr. Ohhira Standard is named for its 12 kinds of live bacteria, and the Deluxe contains 12 lactic acid bacteria strains.
- Amount: how much is in one dose. Compare on the same basis, for example per dose.
- Form: capsule or paste in sachets. Choose the one you will actually take every day.
- Storage: Dr. The probiotics are suitable for room temperature, so no fridge is needed. Check the note on the pack for details.
Dr Ohhira probiotics: what is the difference between the 3-year and 5-year formula?
What sets Dr. Ohhira probiotics apart is long fermentation. Dr. Ohhira Standard is a 3-year formula with a vegan composition. For the 5-year Dr. Ohhira Deluxe, the blend ferments for the first three years and matures for the next two, five years in total. It contains 14 natural raw materials: herbs, mushrooms, algae, vegetables and berries.
Both capsule products state 12 lactic acid bacteria strains on the pack, so the main difference is the length of fermentation: three years or five years. Each pack contains 30 capsules.
The third Dr. Ohhira product in our range is the prebiotic paste in 30 sachets, also a 5-year formula. It is an OM-X paste based on 12 lactic acid bacteria strains and 65 natural plants. If you prefer a paste to a capsule, it is a good fit. All Dr. Ohhira products are on the Dr. Ohhira brand page.
Capsule or paste?
A capsule is compact and easy to carry. A paste suits people who prefer not to swallow capsules. The Dr. Ohhira prebiotic paste comes in 30 sachets. You can find more supplements in the vitamins category.
When to take probiotics
The exact timing and dose are printed on each pack, so follow them. In general, regularity matters more than the hour: choose a time that fits your day and take the product at that time daily, which makes it a habit. Store the product as stated on the pack and check the best-before date.
If you have a health condition, take medicines or are pregnant, ask a doctor or pharmacist before starting a new supplement.
