Seven Hair Care Tips for Frizzy Hair

Last updated:

About 3 min read

Dry and frizzy hair is not only a problem for people with natural curls. One of the main causes is excessive dryness of the hair. Excess humidity makes it even frizzier, because the cuticle, the outer layer of the hair, absorbs moisture from the air. The problem is made even worse by, for example, heat styling and the alcohol content of the hair care products you use.

Frizzy hair not only looks damaged, it is also more likely to break because of its low elasticity. The dryness of your hair is affected by its texture, its protein content and your living environment. With the tips below you can successfully tame your dry and frizzy hair, so that it looks as shiny and healthy as possible.

Which seven tips could you add to your dry hair care routine?

1. Wash your hair less often

Washing your hair too often dries it out, whether your hair is dry or oily. Try to wash your hair 2 to 3 times a week at most, and prefer cool water to hot. Be sure to use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner without alcohol, which would dry the hair out even more.

2. Apply leave-in products to wet hair

To lock even more moisture into the hair, apply moisturising products to wet hair. If possible, dry your hair with a gentle microfibre towel and then let it air dry, to reduce the damage caused by heat styling tools.

3. Deep condition your hair at least once a week

The best helper for dry hair is an intensively moisturising hair mask. Choose a product that suits your hair type, whether your hair is curly, coloured, thin or thick.

4. Use a heat protectant

When styling your hair with heat, be sure to use a heat protectant to reduce damage. Try to choose a suitable temperature on your styling tool as well, because the highest setting may not be necessary for your hair at all!

5. Repair the bonds in your hair broken by over-processing

Constant heat styling and colouring break the bonds in the hair, which in turn leads to breakage. Special treatment products help to repair your hair and give it a healthy, shiny look again.

6. Focus on regular trims of the hair ends

Split ends make your hair look damaged and frizzy. It is good to trim the ends every 6 to 8 weeks, or as needed. If you do it regularly, a small trim is enough and you do not have to cut off a lot of length at once.

7. Change your pillowcases

A cotton pillowcase can absorb some of the moisture from your hair and, with constant rubbing, cause the hair to break. A silk or satin pillowcase is smoother and therefore much gentler on the hair, causing fewer tangles, less breakage and less frizz from friction.

Whether your hair is naturally straight or curly, by adding these simple changes to your hair care routine you can be sure that you will have less frizz. You can moisturise your hair intensively and protect it from damage, but remember that you cannot beat the weather, and in a humid climate some frizz may still appear!
